Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Islands are protected from the open Indian ocean by the Bazaruto Archipelago marine park, a chain of five islands running approximately 13 kilometres offshore.  These break the large Indian ocean rollers making a very safe area for families with small children to enjoy the warm gentle waters hidden behind the islands.

Vilanculos has adequate shopping in three small supermarkets dispersed through the town, as well as a lively and bustling market where local farmers sell their produce and fishermen offer their catch of the day.  Three banks are represented, each with an ATM machine honouring most international credit cards, Beach chalets also accepts both Visa and master credit cards, use your card or bank transfer ability to get instant confirmation of your vacation chalet.   The local hospital is excellent for malaria detection and medication and can handle small wounds and breaks in case of emergency. The Vilanculos airport has just been restructured and upgraded and has daily international flights from Johannesburg and national flights around the country.  The main highway N2 running from south to north of Mozambique has undergone extensive repairs and is now a good asphalt road from Maputo to Vilanculos and on to Inhassoro and Beira.

Vilanculos Mozambique can be a lively town at night with several discotheques and bars pumping out the music.  A good selection of restaurants both in Beach Chalets and lodges as well as independent locations, can guarantee a pleasant night's dining.
